Fruitful Seasons

The Beginnings of Pear-Cardamom Upside-Down Cake

Welcome Friends!

I'm afraid I've got the fever. This ailment is best treated with dashing daffodils and well-tailored tulips. A pair of sandals, in a fair pink hue, and a delicate skirt rimmed with ruffles! Pleasure is mine with an egg-salad sandwich and fresh chopped chives and a strawberry tart on the side! All the anguish will subside if you'll just take me OUTSIDE!

It's time to update our Calendar of Fruit Seasons. I've included a recipe for a bittersweet chocolate sauce at the end. Remember, the fruits listed in capitals are at the height of their seasons.

APRIL: blood oranges, dates, kiwi fruit, kumquats, lemons, nectarines, olallieberries, oranges, papayas, peaches, PINEAPPLES, RHUBARB, strawberries.

MAY: apricots, blackberries, blood oranges, blueberries, cherries, dates, kiwi fruit, lemons, limes, mangoes, nectarines, olallieberries, oranges, PAPAYAS, peaches, PINEAPPLES, PLUMS, raspberries, RHUBARB, STRAWBERRIES.

JUNE: APRICOTS, BLACKBERRIES, blueberries, boysenberries, CHERRIES, dates, figs, GRAVENSTEIN APPLES, huckleberries, kiwi fruit, lemons, limes, loganberries, MANGOES, nectarines, olallieberries, oranges, PAPAYAS, passion-fruit, peaches, PINEAPPLES, PLUMS, RASPBERRIES, RED CURRANTS, strawberries.

Bittersweet Chocolate Sauce

4 oz. semisweet chocolate, broken into small pieces
1/4 c. unsweetened cocoa powder
1/2 c. water

Heat ingredients in a small, heavy saucepan, stirring constantly, until smooth.
Serve warm. Makes 1 cup.

Enjoy the bounty of fresh, ripe fruit in your area. Served with a dainty dollop of real whipped cream, and a steaming cup of orchard peach tea, fruit makes an inviting dessert or afternoon snack.

Swinging with you,
Alis
